Is it Over Yet?

Summer doesn't have a lot going for it.

• It's miserably hot.
• New movies are geared to middle-schoolers.
• Said middle-schoolers run rampant in ice cream parlors and shopping malls.
• Museums take the opportunity to remodel and repair, closing off some of my favorite wings.
• Nasty, creepy bugs feel free to emerge from hiding.
• People go on vacation, making it harder to schedule meetings or do business (no, I'm not a vacationer!).
• Light sherberts (why bother) replace pumpkin ice cream in store freezers.
• Unlike sweaters, summer clothes usually have to be ironed.

I could go on.

So, like Joanna (though for a different reason!), I use summer for making holiday gifts. It's one way of ignoring the worst of the four seasons: pretend it's just a lull to allow preparation for fall, when the new theater and music seasons begin, and winter, which is a treat in itself.

From now until Labor Day, I'll work on handmade presents, even wrapping a few in order to store them more efficiently. I'll prepare my mailing list and gather materials for card-making.

So far, I've knitted a few (tiny) afghans that will go on miniature chairs and couches in the next dollhouse. I'll work on the house through the summer and then donate it to a local school for their holiday raffle in December (now there's a month I treasure).

The only way to get through summer is to count off the days till it's over.

What's your worst season?

How do you knit an afghan for a miniature? What kind of yarn do you use? What kind of needles - toothpicks, maybe?

I don't hate any season, but my favorite is fall, like October, in Chicago. The days are cool, but not cold. The leaves are turning and the sun has a golden color.

I have to agree with you, Summer Time is the worst season for all of the reason you listed plus the humidity and storms. I am so tired of the humidity and hearing the storm sirens going off. Plus you can always add a layer to get warm but there is only so far you can go to cool off.
Summer's only saving grace is I am a school teacher so I get some extra time off, but I am also a big advocate for balance or year round schooling and would love to see that happen soon. December has to be my favorite month also.

Betty I use short OO or OOO straight needles and embroidery thread. There's one brand of thread that is waxy, and that's best, so the needles don't get stuck between plies.

Colleen, we would do well together!

Oh, I'm so glad someone else feels the way I do! I am not a big fan of summer. It's way too hot... I get very cranky when it's hot (ask my children).
My husband and I went to Colorado on our honeymoon 17 years ago in September. We LOVED Colorado in September! Cool and crisp. Even now, when we wake up to a cool morning when summer is over, we say, "it feels like Colorado!"
Give me September & October any time!

I'll match you on crankiness when it's hot, Jeanne (ask my husband!)

Oh ladies, you disappoint me. I LOVE summer. I live in south Louisiana where it IS summer from late April to mid November. I can't stand winter. I can not take the cold. The only snow I want to see is on tv. And talk about cranky. Just ask my husband what it is like being around me when I am too cold. Mind you I do not go out at high noon on a hot day in July, like today. I stay indoors. That's why God invented air-conditioning. I guess we all learn to adapt.

My least favorite season is late winter, when the snow is gray and crunchy. Spring always seems late in coming. My favorite season is autumn, all of it, from the day the humidity and temperature both drop, through the brilliant colors of the leaves, to the lacy thin ice that forms around the edges of puddles and ponds.

Having just returned from a trip to muggy, hot Pittsburgh, I now remember why I used to hate summer, Camille. But living in L.A. now, I can survive it much more easily these days--without much humidity, even when it's hot.

Camille, my favorite season is now autumn, but it used to be summer. I hate being stuck in the house in the snow! I love the colors of autumn!

I may be the only person you all know who prefers humidity! The dry heat is unbearable -- you get the full spectrum of the sun's rays, unmitigated by a drop of moisture.

So while Pittsbugh weather is uncomfortable, Linda, it doesn't seer your skin!

One more reason that I'm out of place in California!

Counting the days until summer is over here in Georgia! Thanks, Camille, for letting me know I'm not the only one who can't wait for summer to end.
