Too Scary

This week we’ve been writing about chilling reads. Here’s the problem - I don’t read really scary stuff anymore. My imagination gets too carried away. A perfect example happened in my old babysitting days. This particular family didn’t have a television or even a radio. I’d finished my homework and was looking for something to read. I found a magazine with some stories in it.

I don’t remember all the details of the story I read, just that it was about some woman walking across a lawn that turned out to have a portal to another dimension in the middle of it. Of course, she didn’t know about the portal and as she stepped into it, she disappeared.

Well, the story scared me so much, I wouldn’t put my feet on the floor, nor get out of the chair I was sitting in. I wanted to wait until the people came home so if I disappeared as I walked across their living room, they could tell my parents where I’d gone.

And as for scary movies, I won’t even watch the ads on TV.

What about you? Do you find yourself creeped out long after reading something scary or seeing a horror movie?

Because Camille is leaving our blog, next week Monica, Linda, Terri and I will all be moving up one day. See you next Friday.

My imagination and recall are way too good for my own good. I remember details of things for years afterwards, so yeah, scary movies really creep me out. I won't watch most of them. I remember an old one from when I was a kid called "The Tingler" about some kind of critter that lived in your spine and if you were scared it could enlarge itself and kill you, and screaming made it shrink and become powerless; well, the characters abducted a deaf woman who couldn't scream so they could get the creature out of her back and study it while it was large, and of course it got away from them and started terrorizing people. Anybody else remember that one? I was only around 9 or 10 when I saw it, watching it late at night, alone, in a big old 2-story house that grandma lived in. (What was I thinking??)

Yikes, Signlady217, that scared me just reading your description. And in a big house alone -

I love watching shows like Ghost Hunters, Ghost Adventures, and Paranormal State. Paranormal Activity, the movie I know itself is not real but it still makes me think. The other night I decided to use my Barnes and Noble gift card to use on my Nook and purchase Ryan Buell's book Paranormal State. My imagination got the best of me and the two nights it took me to read it I became very aware of the noises and shadows around me. LOL, Needless to say, I did not sleep much.

Chrystal, you are so brave. I bet you slept with the light on.

I used to love scary movies, like The Exorcist, Betty. Now, even though I love writing paranormal stories about people with unusual abilities like shapeshifting, horror is no longer appealing to me. There's a difference!

Betty, your story says a lot about the power of words and how the author's imagination could trigger your imagination.

I don't have any desire to be scared just for the sake of being scared. (I can watch a news report for that sensation.) As a child, I always liked "The Twilight Zone" TV shows because they really made me think, although sometimes the episodes were scary.

Linda, I could never bring myself to watch The Exorcist.

Writing about people with paranormal abilities sounds interesting.
