More Genres!

Okay, I’ve done it again. In addition to my existing genres, I’m now writing for a new line--new to me, at least. Sort of.

I just sold a book to Harlequin Romantic Suspense. Almost. The contract hasn’t been signed yet, but I’ve been writing for Harlequin long enough to know that it will be signed soon.

That means I’ll soon have more Pet Rescue Mysteries published, a Harlequin Nocturne plus a couple of Nocturne Bites, and an HRS.

How many genres have I written in--and sold? Well, I started out in time travel romance for Dorchester, and also wrote a romantic fairy tale for them. I additionally wrote a time travel romance for my current mystery publisher, Berkley. I’ve also written Harlequin Intrigues. And I of course write mysteries for Berkley Prime Crime.

Years ago, I wrote a Silhouette Intimate Moments for Harlequin--a paranormal romance for that line in between when they had the Shadows line and now the Nocturnes for which I currently write. Over time, the line and its name have changed--from Silhouette Intimate Moments to Silhouette Romantic Suspense to Harlequin Romantic Suspense. Hence, my “sort of”, above. I’ve sort of written for the line before, but before it morphed to what it is now.

And what is it now? Romantic suspense, with the emphasis on the romantic.

My story’s working title is UNDYING LOVE, although that’s subject to change. So is the currently anticipated publication date of September 2012.

Now all I have to do is write it--with the longer word length the series now requires. That’ll be fun--especially since its background is very loosely based on a mystery in my own life.

Do you like to write in, or read, multiple genres?

I read many genres-and love them all. While my favorite genre would have to be the mystery (cozies in particular) I also like a good romance (especially paranormal...and Regency). I also enjoy some fantasy, biography, and more. I write mainly nonfiction (mainly for myself)-but have been challenged to write a novel. I decided to write a cozy mystery.

I read most genres out there. I like to have a variety in my reading. I am glad that some of the authors like yourself write for more than one genre then us readers can enjoy many genres while reading an author we love.

Well, I have the setting and the main characters. I know who gets murdered and how as well as why our heroine is a prime suspect. But I don't know who the murderer is or the motive. I've written a few scenes. And I just found someone to help me with background research for another main character. I started the project when I was working Night Shift and could write there. I've been forced to Evenings so my writing time got severely cut! I know-I just have to make time and get writing! lol

And readers like you make authors like me happy, Angela!

Very impressive, Linda! Congratulations. You may be setting a genre record! I hope they all do very well -- I know you'll have a good time with them.

Definitely a good time, Camille. I doubt that I'm setting a record, but wouldn't that be fun!

I read mostly mysteries, thrillers and romantic suspense. I like light paranormal (no vamps, werewolves or shapshifters or the like) and I'll also read a few contemporary romance or women's fiction titles.

This is a testament to your creative imagination, Linda! I curtsey to your ambition (and envy your ability to juggle!)

Mystery is my love. That's what I read, that's what I write. Every now and then I'll detour into a romance to clean my palate, but there are so many old and new mysteries I haven't read—they could keep me busy forever. I adore the classics, but I also adore the new breed of writers.

Writing mystery is a trip—the characters and plot never fail to surprise me.

Thank you for the post, Linda, and best of luck on your new romantic suspense. Can't wait to read what you come up with.

That's a bunch of genres and subgenres, Dru. Sounds like most of my stuff except the Nocturnes could be of interest... or not!
