Halloween and Horror

Halloween seems to be our theme this week on Killer Hobbies, and everywhere else, too!

Halloween’s one of my favorite holidays, and always has been. I once loved to figure out what costume to wear--partly because it was another way of being someone else. Playing a role. Enjoying the fiction. When I was a kid, I loved to act and go on stage, even took classes at the Pittsburgh Playhouse. Being myself and giving a speech--no way!

That’s reversed these days. I give a lot of talks, plus I’m on panels and teach classes. That’s all related to fiction, too--what I’m writing.

But my taste in fiction has changed over the years. I used to love to see horror movies. Not today! I like action and adventure, comedy, biographical stories, inspirational, suspense... but nothing that’s likely to scare me. That’s reflected in what I write, too, or at least I think so. I suppose people could be scared a bit by my Harlequin Nocturne shapeshifters, but if so it’s because those who are scared are the bad guys in my stories and deserve their comeuppances.

My Halloween costume these days usually consists of a black, flowing witch dress that I sometimes deck out with accessories. That’s not intended to scare anyone. Should people consider me a good witch? Why not! I admit to a crazy cackle now and then, though.

My dogs seem to take my dressing up in stride. And since we hardly get any trick-or-treaters at our house to bark at, they don’t seem bothered by Halloween.

How about you--do you have a favorite Halloween costume? What do your pets think about the holiday?

The set of animals I have now ignore the whole thing.

My very favorite costume was a hand me down. It was a witch costume and what I liked the best was it had a real witches hat, instead of some plastic thing that was part of a mask.
