DIY

I'm putting on my DIY hat for the next week. Who am I kidding? I don’t have a DIY hat or tool apron or anything like that. I’ve never been one who has done house projects. I’m more likely to sew a new wall hanging than paint a wall. Luckily I have a brother who’s a professional and he’s coming to help me out. (By that I mean, do the work.)

We are ripping out my fifteen year-old carpets and putting in new hardwood floors. By we, of course, I mean he. I’m not exactly sure what my role in all this will be, but I’m picturing runs to the hardware store and making healthy, nutritious meals.

I'm excited but also apprehensive. I've never seen my place with wood floors. I know I like the idea but will I love them once they're in? There will be no going back.

After the floors are done, new paint is next on the agenda. I've been trying out colors on the walls, which are now mostly white. Again, I have an idea of what the walls might look like in blue or aqua or gray, but I can only imagine the actual results. You might say it's only paint, but I have high ceilings and need professionals in to do the work. So I’ll dive off the high dive and pick a shade.

Its always that way with transformation, isn't it? Never really knowing what the outcome will be, only knowing that a change is necessary. We try a new hair stylist, we eat a different ethnic food. My mother was right when she said, you won't know until you try. Who knew Brussels sprouts could actually taste good?

Maybe the DIY hat will fit me after all.

I'm chuckling to myself here, because I see dragging hunks of old carpet out to the dumpster in your future. The nutritious meals will no doubt be welcome, too. (Still chuckling. I've been down this road.)
And if it turns out you aren't as crazy about the wood, you can always add rugs, or even carpet over it. Our hardwood was carpeted for about 10 years, which protected it beautifully. Now the hardwood's back, but with rugs to soften it.
Quilts can be used for so many purposes, but can you make a quilted rug? (Revealing my ignorance, here.)

You are right, Julie. Carpet dragging to the dumpster will be my job!

I've put quilts on a lot of surfaces but not a floor. Always a first time, though.

Thanks for the encouragement.

I'm not especially a DIYer, either, Terri--but I'm fortunate to have a husband who is. You'll have to let us know how the makeover turns out!

Thanks, Linda. I will.

Becky says: Your project sounds like such fun. My friend has posted a neat piece about a tool for thinking about paint colors, it is the October 11 entry in this blog:

I checked it out, Becky. It's very cool! I'll try that Sherwin Williams tool out. Thanks

I can do little things but for big jobs, I call in the professionals.

Good luck and you'll love your hardwood floors.

Thanks Dru!

The DIY one around my place is me. Tomorrow, its up on a ladder to clean the gutters and try to repair one before it rains.
