The Pack is Back

In the past we’ve done our dog grooming ourselves, but this year our two Cavalier King Charles Spaniels have received professional grooming. We tried it first with Lexie, the older dog, and then had Mystie groomed a couple of months later.

Yesterday, we had them both groomed at the same time. They look adorable and seem even more energetic, so it’s a good thing for all of us.

But having both babies gone from the house at the same time was definitely depressing for me. I missed their demands for attention every few minutes. I listened for their barking or panting, waited for one or both to paw at me to go outside. I waited for them to bark when I heard a package being delivered or neighbors walking by with their pets.

My husband Fred was out running errands for some of the time the pups were gone--and I felt lonely! It didn’t help that we’d loaned our other vehicle to our younger son. I wasn’t exactly housebound, and I did get some editing done... but I still felt bereft!

The pups are home now and of course remain amazingly cute. I always appreciate my dogs, but at the moment I appreciate them even more. They think they’re alphas in our pack, and maybe they are.

How about you? What’s your pack like in your home?

My own house is pretty quiet. But my daughter's is full of life and quite noisey. Three kids. One boxer. Two adults. It's like a three ring circus most of the time.

Your post has touched my heart. Last month I lost my sweet little Italian Greyhound, Tommy. He had an unexpected severe stroke and I had to have him put down within hours of it happening. It's been devastating for me.

I can't believe how much I miss him. Every time I come home from running an errand I find myself listening for his joyful barks when I walk in the door and the silence that greets me stabs me in the heart. I miss tripping over his chew toys and watching him chase the wild turkeys out of the yard and digging in the garbage, and chasing the cat, and begging for food while I'm trying to eat, and pulling on the leash when we would go for walks. I miss having his warm little body snuggled up against my back at night. Most of all, though, I miss that barking and bouncing wiggling little bundle of energy when I walked in the door. It made me feel like "I'm home". Our fur kids are so special.

So you can have a dose of noisy household whenever you choose, Janie--sounds like a wonderful situation!

Oh, BeadKnitter, I am so sorry. I know what it's like to lose a beloved pet and can empathize with what you're going through. Such wonderful memories you have. I'm sending lots of hugs your way.

The pitter patter of little feet, even if there are four of them, touches us, doesn't it? I always like that there is someone else breathing in the house besides me.

Love that pitter patter of little paws, Terri. I even love when that breathing turns into snores!

My two cats cause much more commotion than my terrier who doesn't know she's a terrier. Rocky, the male cat likes to hug me and drape himself around my shoulders.

Spago, the female, loves food. If I open a yogurt, she's there looking for her taste.

If our two cats ever got together, they could run our place. Fortunately, they aren't very fond of one another - each wants to be an only cat, I think - so it's "divide and conquer" around here.
