Change

I like this quote: We go through our daily lives without noticing change, then suddenly everything is different.

That's what has happened to me in regards to my house. I've been on my own for a few years now. For more than a year, I've been clearing out old things - papers, pictures, yes, even fabric and books. Remnants of another life. I garage saled, freecycled, donated boxes and boxes. At the time I thought I was moving into a smaller space and so had to divest myself. That didn't happen, but I can't say that I've missed anything that I gave away. Once I realized that, I dug a little deeper and questioned the value of everything in my house.

Slowly, space freed up. Over time.

You know my brother was here putting in hardwood floors for me. Those floors became the linchpin. Once he put the floors in, I was able to get rid of two pieces of furniture that no longer suited my needs. These pieces have felt like albatrosses around my neck. One was a large baseball glove colored leather sofa. Not my style. The other was a large (and very heavy) wall unit circa 1988. These piece took two very strong guys a lot of huffing and puffing to get out to the dumpster. I was so happy to see it go. The sectional went to a couple whose six year old entertained me with tales of a king who had guards who looked a lot like sofa cushions.

I could take pictures to show you the new floors, but they wouldn't mean much. I like the way the house looks now (although I still a new paint job) but what's most important is what isn't here anymore. The only things left in my house are things that I love.

That's the change I can see, even if no one else can.

I have noticed that when I clear things out of a room, the energy changes.

Enjoy your new floor.

I do this to my writing space every few years. You're tempting me to get at it again soon. Can't wait to see the changes!

Go, Becky, go.

As one who saves nearly everything, I find your post an inspiration, Terri!

Oh boy, Linda. Start small. But I guarantee you won't miss it, whatever it is.

I retired a year ago and since then, I also dropped alot of excess weight. I decided to get rid of all clothing that didn't fit anymore. That got me started.

I have been going through closets and boxes and other stuff, like an archaeological dig! It is amazing what I am finding. I am donating alot and I am planning to sell some stuff.

I agree with you Terri that I do not miss stuff I have gotten rid of.
