Natural Remedies for Jet Lag

Getting ready for take off? Stop at your health food store first. Flying for long distances, especially through several time zones, is very stressing to the body. But you can arrive refreshed, thanks to these natural remedies:

Reset Your Body Clock with Natural Remedies

Before taking your trip, load up on antioxidant vitamins A (10,000 IU) , C, E (400 IU), and the mineral selenium. This will help protect you against free radical damage caused by radiation during the flight.  Take an anti-stress high-potency B-complex (50 mg) vitamin with 1,000 mg of time-release vitamin C.

On the plane. A high carbohydrate meal will make it easier to sleep either on the plane or at your destination. The plane's environment will probably be lower in oxygen than the regular atmosphere and also quite dry, which may cause you to become dehydrated. If you drink alcoholic beverages it will make you even more dehydrated. So during the flight (and afterward) be sure to drink plenty of fluids, especially water, to rehydrate your body.

When you land. If you arrive during the day, get some sunlight to recharge your batteries. This will help you adjust to the new time zone.  A lavender or rosemary aromatherapy bath, clay mask, followed by a quick cold shower will make you feel refreshed. The Chinese patent formula Cerebral Tonic Pills can also be used to help overcome jet lag. Allow yourself a day or so to adjust to a new time zone.

Homeopathic remedies that can help jet lag include:

Arnica :             For the shock and stress of changing time zones.

Cocculus:          Hollow empty feeling, irritable, weak, foggy. Nausea and faintness.

Nux vomica:    Nervous debility with trembling. No desire for food. Irritable and       constipated.

Phosphorus:    Dizzy, sluggish, absent minded and  cloudy. Dizzy in morning. May have vomiting. Natural food stores carry homeopathic combinations to help overcome jet lag.

Sleep Easier

Before you go, adjust your sleep routine to the new time zone. Also, try to schedule your arrival for 9 PM so you can get a rejuvenating night´s sleep. If you are traveling across time zones, take up to 8 mg of melatonin at bedtime at your destination. Melatonin is manufactured in the brain during periods of darkness (the level of the hormone melatonin decreases with age, people over the age of 50 are more susceptible to jet lag) to promote sleep. Usage for four days after arriving makes you less sleepy, more efficient at work, and less moody. Melatonin helps re-set your body clock and facilitates deep and restful sleep. For best results, take 30 minutes before bedtime. An Epsom salt bath will also help you sleep. Do not take if you are driving, operating machinery, or before work.

If you have any questions or concerns please see your health practitioner.

Happy Travels!

Here's a book to take on your flight! SCENT to KILL: A Natural Remedies Mystery. Here's the scoop!

Willow McQuade, naturopathic doctor, along with her hunky ex-cop boyfriend Jackson Spade, attend a party for a psychic TV show that is filming on Long Island’s idyllic East End. However, Willow is much more interested in visiting the estate’s lavender farm, seeking inspiration for the new aromatherapy workshops she'll be holding at her store, Nature’s Way Market & CafĂ©.

Before the party is over, Roger Bixby one of the producers is dead and the police suspect murder. Roger was working on the show, MJ’s Mind, with Carly Bixby, his ex-wife and the new girlfriend of Willow's ex from L.A., TV writer/producer Simon Lewis.

After Willow leaves the party, she gets a frantic text from Simon asking for her help. Since Simon had a fight with Roger earlier in the evening, and because of his death is now the primary shareholder in Galaxy films, Willow's ex becomes the prime suspect. Simon begs her to crack the case and clear him of the murder. MJ McClellan, the psychic and star of the show also asks Willow for help. She hires Willow to provide natural remedies, including aromatherapy, massage, acupuncture and yoga to soothe the agitated crew of her show.

To find the killer, Willow has to deal with ghosts in a haunted mansion, a truly dysfunctional family, death threats and “accidents,” while trying to untangle a homicide identical to one committed during prohibition. Thankfully, Jackson has been hired to provide security and is there to watch her back and help Willow solve this spooky mystery.

Wish I'd had some of this information before my trip to RWA National, Chrystle, since the conference was way across the country from where I live. I'll keep it in mind for my next journey.
