I Love Yarn Day

Happy I Love Yarn Day! While I was doing some research, I found out that according to the Craft Yarn Council over 50 million people knit, crochet or otherwise work with yarn.

I can certainly understand why working with yarn appeals to so many people. With all the stuff with computers and cell phone and assorted technology, it is nice to make something using none of it. There is something deeply satisfying about making something by hand. It seems almost like magic that you start with a ball of yarn and then turn it into something like a scarf.

I like the way working with yarn is portable. It is easy to carry around a small project in your purse or bag, so whenever you have some time with nothing to do, it’s there to keep you entertained. Also there to keep you from getting bored.

I have written many times how knitting or crocheting is a great way to relieve tension. It always amazes me that it works so well.

And then there is the obvious reason people work with yarn. They end up with sweaters, blankets, scarves and lot of other things to keep or give away.

I’m not sure if it is coincidence or not, but this weekend there is a yarn show in Southern California called Yarnophere which is being held on the Orange County Fair Grounds in the Anaheim building. I’m going to be signing copies of Yarn to Go and a selection of the Crochet Mysteries at the Custom Handweaving booth on Saturday from 2 to 3 pm. The trick will be to get out without shopping bags of yarn.

There truly is a magic quality to knitting and crocheting. When I crochet or knit, I feel a connection to the past, to a simpler time. It's amazing how you start with one tiny stitch, which soon becomes lots of stitches and then becomes a finished project. I am amazed at all the creativity in patterns and yarn.

Enjoy Yarnosphere, and don't be too hard on yourself if those shopping bags of yarn happen to beg you (and only you!) to adopt them and you simply can't resist. Not many of us could!

Happy Yarn Day, Betty! Your relationship with yarn as a creative outlet--both by designing lovely items and writing mysteries that include yarn--is quite impressive!

Planner; I agree that knitting and crochet connect us to a simpler times. And working with yarn seems to feed the spirit.
