On Saturday I hosted a big party here at Aquila Commons, a Hat Party. I brought down almost all my hats – it gave me a chance to do an inventory. I’ve been telling people I have “around forty” hats, which I thought was correct. But I was wrong, I have nearly fifty! Other women brought down their (mostly) retired hats, and we spread them all out on tables pushed together and set up two full-length mirrors and a hand mirror, and tried them on. It astonished me how the right hat could absolutely set off a face or outfit. Everyone looked fine, nobody looked silly or awful; but some of the women went from good-looking to stunning when they put on the right hat. We served tea and coffee and lemonade. Some of the ladies made bars or cookies (the lemon bars were fabulous!) and two of us made cucumber sandwiches. Not what you might think, a namby-pamby thin slice of cucumber on thinly-sliced buttered white bread, no sir! For mine I baked two baguettes, and sliced them, then mixed a package of cream cheese with a cup of sour cream and a tablespoon of milk and added an envelope of Italian dressing and mixed well. I spread the mixture on slices of bread, topped that with a slice of cucumber – and topped that with a slice of pink pickled ginger. Very tasty!

Hi Monica,
The name Beza crops up as a surname pretty often, so it may have been a case of mother's maiden name being used as a Christian name for the oldest son.
Hold up, I found another epitaph, of a man who died in 1824 whose name is given in full: Bezaleel Beckwith. Now a new question: where did the name Bezaleel come from? A lot of these odd names are Old Testament, but I don't recognize this one.
I love how hats are as important to you as dogs are to me, Monica!

Thank you, Helen! A worker in metal, how interesting - I wonder if either of these men in the epitaphs lived up to their namesakes?
And Linda, you're right. But hats go quietly into their boxes when I'm done with them, so I don't have to go out on cold winter nights to take them for a walk.
