Sometimes Simple is Best

About a year ago we got a new loan on our house. The offered us a choice of thank you gifts and among them was an electric coffee maker. It had a thermal carafe, a coffee grinder in it, was programable and had a clock. It said the coffee pot was worth something around $150.00. It seemed perfect.

There were a couple of things left out of the description, but I found out after getting it that the coffee grinder part was inefficient, the carafe didn’t keep the coffee hot, the thing was big and clunky, it was difficult to make coffee with and most of all didn’t make good coffee.

I finally decided to replace it. My only requirements for a new coffee pot was that it use a cone filter. I went online looking for what I wanted. You would think it would be easy to find since it was so basic. I have had Braun coffee pots in the past that I liked, so thought I would try to get another one of those. The Braun website had just what I wanted, but it wasn’t for sale anyplace, but some sites on Ebay. I’m not a big Ebay shopper, so I kept looking.

I looked at lots and lots of coffee pots online with all kinds of extras and hefty prices. Finally by chance I came across a Hamilton Beach coffee pot that was simple. It just heated the water and sent it through the coffee grounds in a cone shaped filter. It had a glass pot and a hot plate to keep the coffee hot. Just what I wanted. But finding it was another story. I wanted to go to a brick and mortar store and buy it. It wasn’t available anywhere. So, I settled for buying it online. It was really weird. It comes in black or white. But the black version was about $10 more. Finally I got it in white for something like $15.88 with free shipping (because I bought a couple of books, too).

I took it out of the box. It was easy to use. All it does is heat the water and spray it over the cone shaped filter. It doesn’t even have a clock. But it makes good coffee.

So crazy that it was so hard to find.

I just had to replace a coffee maker too and also went for the less expensive, more simple variety. I got a Black & Decker that's similar to your Hamilton Beach, Betty, bought it at a local store and didn't have to pay more for the black version. It works fine!

I bought a Black & Decker coffee maker a few years ago on Black Friday. We absolutely love it! A week later I went back to the store and paid full price for a second one - just for back up!

Linda, I think I looked at the Black & Decker, but I don't think it uses the cone shaped filters. The water spends more time going through the grounds with that shaped filter.

Miss Merry,

Good for you, getting a back up. You'll never not have coffee.
