My Dell book of easy crosswords is getting dog eared. I am on puzzle 86. I have to admit that when I bought it, I wondered if I would do more than one. But once I realized that I could actually do them, I was hooked. And now when I'm waiting for someone--which is like all the time--it's something better to do that doom scrolling on my phone.
I believe they really do sharpen the mind. I notice that when I start a new one, I am often stumped and then as I move forward, the answers show up more and more quickly. To be far, there are a lot of the same answers in them. I can't tell you how many times, the clue is an Alda on TV.
Some of the answers are certain as in Alan for the the above clue, but with some there can be different meanings for the words in the clue. It feels like exercise for my brain. It helps in life too. Seeing more than one way to look at things is always good. All that work with words is helpful with writing, too. More than once I have been amazed at the different meanings
I am getting close to the end of crossword book and already have a new one in waiting . This one promises to be one step up from easy. I look forward to the challenge.
Good morning -- I may have to get a crossword puzzle book -- keep my old mind sharp, though I do have a better memory than my 64-year-old som -- I remind him of things!! I like the word search puzzles.
ReplyDeleteIt's been a typical Phoenix summer -- 118 on Wednesday, only 111 yesterday. I had to go to the DMV to get an ID card -- from the time we went into the building at 9:15 until we came out about 40 minutes later, a very hot wind had started blowing -- it was uncomfortable walking across the parking lot.
I'm loving the ombre yarns -- the subtle color changes look great in most any pattern. My kids have recently needed blankets as gifts for several friends -- and a woman to whom I'd given a blanket several years ago called and asked that I make one for her to give to a friend. My stash for Ronald McDonald needs to be replenished.
Hope your day goes well -- writing, puzzle working, crocheting -- whatever!!
Oh my, did I beat Patty today? Hope she is ok. I have a yarn thing to share ! A friend made me a lap afghan from a varigated yard. The yarn has loops tied about every half inch. It is all finger knitting. you pass loop one over two, then two over three, etc. to get the width you want, then turn the piece and go back the other way. My friend has actually made one for a queen size bed. I need to get out my Casey books, but I think this is different than what they were trying in one of her retreats. The yarn is very large and comes in solid or varigated patterns. Apparently there is a guy on UTube showing other things you can make--I haven't found him yet.
ReplyDeleteI also carry a puzzle book everywhere. I like the logic puzzles, but they can be very difficult. You might like a variety book with lots of things to try. Great for the mind !
Nope, Patty was already on here before me !
ReplyDeleteHa!! I'm an early to bed, early to rise person!!
DeleteGood morning blog friends, though it is afternoon here in Florida. Patty my daughter lives in Mesa and is finding this summer to be challenging. Lucky for her she is headed off to Alaska for a week soon. Florida is super humid with some amazing thunderstorms.
ReplyDeleteBetty, I've enjoyed crossword books in the past. Thanks for the reminder. I have a surgical procedure next week and that may be a good way to pass time during recovery. Happy weekend everyone!
The humidity is so low -- even 110 in the shade isn't too bad. The Florida humidity would be awful. We had family in the Houston, TX area and it is like the tropics down there. Plus huge mosquitoes!! Hope your surgery goes well.
DeletePatty, I remember stuff for my son too, and he's only 44.
ReplyDelete118, 111-- wow that's hot. So far this summer hasn't been too bad here. It got hot for a couple of days, but went back to a high in the 80s..
I'll have to look at the ombre yarn. It is nice to be able to have color variations without having to keep changing yarn. Your afghans must be treasured items.
Stay cool!
Linda Osborn, I remember trying finger knitting and it was interesting, but I still prefer needles and circular ones at that.
ReplyDeleteLogic puzzles are a definite challenge. I will have to look at one of the books with different kinds of puzzles. Carrying any kind of puzzle book is a good way to keep your mind focused and a good distraction when you're stuck waiting.
Sally, I bet your daughter will enjoy the change in temperature. When we went up north, it was nice to feel chilly.
ReplyDeleteI'm guessing those thunderstorms don't bring any relief in the temperature or humidity.
Good luck on your procedure. I'm sure we will all be sending you good thoughts.
I love doing crossword puzzles, Betty. I like the easy ones too but I do try some that are more difficult. I want to keep my vocabulary moving!
ReplyDeleteLinda O. Johnston, I agree about trying some harder ones. I have tried the one in the Atlantic Monthly and was able to do part of it. It's always good to keep stretching your horizons.
ReplyDeleteI also have the Dell crossword puzzle books. I enjoy them. I always try the puzzle in the Sunday Los Angeles Times but it is always way above my level so I use it as a teaching tool.
