Graduation

June is the month for graduation. Tonight was the graduation of a different group. Our quilting group at the women's shelter showed off their quilts to friends and family.

Showing newbies how to make a quilt is a real treat. We start with strips of various widths. The sewers stitch them to a foundation square, adding enough to cover the block. It's then trimmed down to a 12/5" block. It's simple but effective, and a method used by quilters for years. No block looks the same. Each maker choses their color combination. The quilt changes yet again when the sashings and borders are picked. Even though the quilts are all made from the same pattern, none look alike.

None of the women who participate are the same either. They all have their own stories and personalities. Some are quiet and shy, others more outgoing. Most of them have never sewn before but soon fall in love. The excitement builds as each block is trimmed. The sense of accomplishment grows, and their pride swells. it's lovely to watch.

Quilting may not change the trajectory of a person's life, but it can make the journey more fun. I'm proud to be a small part of that.
