Random Thoughts

Writer’s joke:  The past, the present and the future walked into a bar.  It was tense.

Something I read on the Internet: “One of the most interesting findings in a new report from Germany is about the under-appreciated — and under-studied — role of ‘nocebo’ effects in clinical trials. If you tell a group of trial volunteers that they’re testing a new drug that may relieve the pain of migraines, a significant number of volunteers will experience pain relief after taking the drug — even if they’ve been randomly assigned to the placebo group and are receiving nothing but sugar pills. The placebo effect in action. But here’s where it gets interesting. If you tell the volunteers that the side effects of this new medicine may include dry mouth, tingling in the hands and feet, and slight dizziness, some volunteers will experience precisely these side effects — in both groups. In fact, some volunteers who are taking nothing but sugar pills will be made so uncomfortable by these symptoms that they will choose to drop out of the trial early.”  I remember reading years ago that people who believe in curses will actually die if they are made to perceive they've been cursed.

In case any of you were thinking the enterprising gene had gone dormant in America (clever and very funny): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-oYl-Lm9a6U&feature=player_embedded

I’m down eight pounds this morning on my diet.  I have decided I don’t miss bread all that much.

Have any of you read Randy Wayne White’s mysteries set on Sanibel Island?  I talked with a woman yesterday who was reading one, and she said they were really good.  I’ve been to Sanibel Island a few times – I have a sister who lives in Fort Myers, adjacent to the island, and it’s a great place to visit, and the beach is fantastic if you like shelling.  I'm going to try one.

Looking ahead: I placed an order for my geese for Michaelmas over the weekend.  If you eat goose on the Feast of St. Michael and All Angels (September 29) you won’t want for money for a year.  Works for us, and I have a great recipe.

I like that joke, too. And congrats on how well you're doing on your diet, Monica.

I've read (or rather, listened to) one of Rand Wayne White's books and enjoyed it. I a tally listened to it while walking the beach at Sanibel last December. There's a restaurant, Doc Ford's, named after the main character, over toward Captiva.
