On the Road

I am writing this from the Sunset Inn in Pacific Grove, California. This place is meant for people on vacation, not people trying to do work on a computer. There is no desk – just a table at a bad angle to type on. If I wrote much with my hands at this angle, I’d end up with pain somewhere.

I came up here to do research for Silence of the Lambs Wool, the second book in the yarn retreat series. On the drive up here, we stopped in Solvang, which is a Danish village filled with quaint stores and butter cookies. I wanted to stop there because there is a wonderful weaving and spinning store. I wanted to buy a drop spindle, but I wanted to get some advice on what kind to. Buy Not only was I able to figure out the best one to get, I got some fleece to prepare to spin and a quick lesson.

Pacific Grove is my model for Cadbury by the Sea. Geez, my shoulders are already starting to hurt from typing at this angle, so this will be a short blog. I came up here because I found that I needed specifics. When I read over Yarn to Go, I regretted describing things from memory which tended to be more general.

So, after a night and a day of really looking at buildings, the sky and the model for Vista Del Mar, the conference center where the retreats take place, I have lot of notes, mental images and photographs. I paid attention to the smell of the air and to places like a coffee shop as we walked past. I studied the fog as it floated in. I really loaded up on details. Now, after another day of enjoying the beauty up here, I am ready to go home and learn how to spin and write the rest of the book.
