Before I write every book, I write a synopsis. It takes an amazingly long time because I am creating a story out of thin air. It is a lot different than sitting down and writing the story as it unfolds. Lots of writers would say it was harder.
I come up with an idea and it seems to take a lot of time to germinate. I write lots of notes about possibilities. Sometimes I use note cards to get the sequence of things. It feels like I go in circles for awhile and then the pieces begin to fall into place.
I always get to a point where I feel panicky and think I am on the totally wrong track and that it’s horrible and makes no sense. But then I persevere, thinking I’ve come this far with this story line - why not at least finish it.
I have done it enough times now that it is a little easier, but not much. I do see why my publisher requires it. If they have a problem with a story line, it is much better to know before I write the manuscript.
I have just finished the synopsis for the third Yarn Retreat book, which for now I am calling My Favorite Yarn, but the title could change. And now I am ready to sending it through cyberspace to my editor and then wait for her comments. Fingers crossed she likes it, so my fingers can start dancing over the keys and I can write the book.

Since I'm a "plotter" and not a "pantser" I always come up with a synopsis to work from, Betty, whether or not a publisher requires it. Fortunately, I've come up with a planning system that works for me, but every writer has to figure out the best way for herself--and it sounds as if you've done it, even if it's hard work! And my fingers are crossed for you regarding My Favorite Yarn.
Linda, I think being a plotter is much more efficient. I'd love to hear your planning system.
Whatever you're doing, Betty, it's absolutely working. I love your books! When reading them, I often wonder, "How did she ever think of that?"
