Today is Michaelmas

I have two geese waiting in the kitchen for my attention.  I will roast one here this morning, the other this afternoon at a friend's house, and we will eat them both this evening and follow the instructions below:

Who eats goose on the Feast of St. Michael and All Angels will not want for money for a year.
                                                                                                            Old Superstition

PRAYER TO ST. MICHAEL
(Said instead of Grace before the meal)
St. Michael the Archangel, defend us in battle.  Be our
safeguard against the wiles and wickedness of the devil.
Restrain him, O God, we humbly beseech Thee, and do thou, O
Prince of the Heavenly Host, cast into hell Satan and the other
evil spirits who prowl about the world seeking the destruction of
souls.  Amen.

A HYMN FOR MICHAELMAS
Tune: Amazing Grace

Amazing goose, how sweet the flesh,
That saved a wretch like me.
I once was broke, but now I'm flush,
I'm saved from penury.

'Twas bills that taught my heart to fear
And goose my fears relieved.
How precious is our Michaelmas,
And all it has achieved.

'Twas many dangers, toils, and snares
That left our wallets bare.
St. Michael filled them up again,
Once we his goose did share

When we meet here again next year
As rich as Donald Trump,
We’ll be as loud and sing out proud
How we gave our debt the bump.*

Amazing goose, how sweet the flesh,
That saved a wretch like me.
I once was broke, but now I'm flush,
I'm saved from penury.
                                                                                    *This verse changes every year

We’ve been celebrating Michaelmas in this peculiar way for over thirty years.  It hasn’t made us rich, but it has stopped the fiscal emergencies, as in you get $500 in the bank and your car has a $600 breakdown.  Eat goose at Michaelmas and if you get $500 in the bank, your car has at most a $490 breakdown.

Did you sit up Sunday night to watch the eclipse?  We did – just until the moon was fully eclipsed and we could gaze in wonder at the marvelous burnt-orange color of it.  Then we went to bed.

I found someone to design the knitting pattern for Knit Your Own Murder, and on Saturday got a copy of the Sophie Cat she designed.  Adorable!

That cat really is cute! And although I tried to see the blood moon, all I got was a view of the full moon toward the end of the eclipse, with just an end of it eaten away.
