Blood stained hobby

One of the laws of science is that the smaller the hobby, the more space it takes up. It follows then, that my hobby of making miniatures and dollhouses would require the largest amount of space.

Trying to contain the hobby, I bought a new set of organizers. [I always feel that's half the work.]

You wouldn't be surprised to find plastic drawers with labels like FOOD, where I keep all my wonderful Fimo dough bread and cakes and tiny racks of lamb, or CARPETS, where there are miniature area and throw rugs, or—the first drawer—BOOKS.

My favorite drawer is the one labeled WEAPONS. Of course I have miniature guns and rifles, but mystery readers and writers have more imagination than that. In the weapons draw you'll also see an iron, a toaster, and a curling iron (for those bathtub crimes!), and assorted tools and blunt objects. Both with mysteries and with miniature crime scenes, it's important to choose the right weapon.

I also keep a container of blood-red paint always handy on my crafts table.

Does anyone else have a dark side to your hobby?

I know I'm not the only one. I love Terri's crime scene fabric, for example (hoping she'll throw a small scrap my way!)

I don't have a "dark" hobby, but I DO so love your miniatures! You're so talented... I wish I could do something like that! Great work!

I found fabric with handcuffs, too!

I found scrapbooking embellishments with a police uniform, handcuffs, a baton, and a gun. But my favorite is any paper with a deadly theme or skulls, which is usually available for Halloween.

I have a big roll of Crime Scene tape, the stuff cops use to mark off areas where a crime has been committed. I gave a good length of it to a needlework shop where I was making an appearance and they used it to decorate the window and door of their shop. Attendance that night was very sparse and it turned out people saw the tape and thought a real crime had been committed so they went home!

The most exciting "dark" thing I collect, Camille, is contact information for research resources, including people in law enforcement. Collecting off-beat weapons for research sounds like a great idea!

I always use crime scene tape at parties and one New Years Eve we really needed construction tape for a redo of our front steps. People saw it and ignored it, thinking it was just one of my jokes!

Would love to see the handcuff fabric!

Ever read the comic strip "Calvin and Hobbes"? The snowmen ones are so hilarious! I love the ones where Calvin builds the snowmen so they look like they've been killed or committed suicide. (I don't even want to know what that says about my state of mind!) ;)

Oh, I want to see that one signlady!

It's kind of hard to collect dark things for crochet. The closest thing I can think of is that in You Better Knot Die there are directions for a vampire scarf. It's black and white, has pointy trim which are vaguely reminicent of fangs and a crimson tassle. I don't think I have to say was the red tassle stands for.

I think that scarf qualifies, Betty!
