The Writing Flow

I finished a very rough first draft of my next Harlequin Nocturne--and was kind of surprised when I did. Although I knew what the end would be, it sort of sneaked up on me

There I was, writing away about the romance and the suspense and the paranormal shapeshifter stuff, and suddenly the characters got together and did what they needed to end the story.

Well, okay, maybe it wasn’t so sudden, and I wasn’t totally surprised. After all, it had all been roiling around in my subconscious for quite a while.

Yes, I still have a lot of editing to do, so I’ll show those characters who’s boss. Maybe.

Do your happy endings, written or otherwise, sometimes sneak up on you?

They sneak up on me all the time.

Characters do sneaky things sometimes. Two of mine went off for a nooner in the front seat of his truck.

I swear I had nothing to do with it!

I've had it happen, and not only at the end, but in the middle. Being an author is, in a way, going insane. Characters who exist only in your mind take over a task you are trying to complete. Crazy!

Isn't it fun, Vickie?

Uh-oh, Terri--but bet you had a good time memorializing what they were up to.

Love that craziness, Monica!

The ending of Behind the Seams totally surprised me. It absolutely works and is a total cliffhanger. The copy editor even put a note when she got to it and said she couldn't wait for the next book in the series. Actually, my editor said the same thing.
