Plotting

Okay, subconscious. Get to work!

That’s me, talking to my subconscious via the computer page as I write this. That’s because, at this moment, I need it to develop a few plots.

I have a manuscript in the hands of some critiquing friends that I’ll need to edit quickly once I receive their comments. I’m also doing copy edits on my upcoming Pet Rescue Mystery, HOUNDS ABOUND. But I’m also working on some plots for two new Pet Rescue Mysteries. Plus, I intend to propose some more stories in my Alpha Force miniseries about shapeshifters for Harlequin Nocturne and need to come up with ideas to pitch. Then there’s the idea for another mystery series that I’m working on.

I’ve got family arriving for visits in the next couple of days. I’m delighted, but the distraction may give my subconscious an excuse to take some time off. I’m an unyielding taskmaster, though, so--if you’re reading this, subconscious, you’ve got to stay busy no matter what!

All right. I admit it. I’m not really worried about my subconscious coming through for me. It always has before, and it’ll rise to the latest challenges as well. It knows that my favorite quote is “Reality is only for those who lack imagination.” My imagination is my friend, and it’s tied to my subconscious.

How about you--what orders do you give to your subconscious--and does it always listen?

Oh if only I could tame that subconscious of mine! It ignores me most of time, at others, when it listens, there are delightful moments, but it likes to be allusive, part of its mystique I guess.

Sounds like a challenge to tame your subconscious, H.L.--or not! Maybe it's more fun just letting it go.

I need to come up with one more solid, coherent plot, and I'll have a trilogy ready to pitch. So far my subconscious isn't holding up its end. What I really need is for the Plot Fairy to whack me on the head with her Wand of Plot. If you see her, send her my way, okay?

Wow, Julie, I need a visit and whack or two, too! I'll send the Plot Fairy your way if I see her first, but if she visits you first please tell her to also come see me.

Linda, last night I took my sister, Jane, and my pal Linda Hengerer to dinner. We had a plotting summit. Wow, those two ladies are crazy good!

I take a walk and talk to myself. And I always have a good answer and new plot ideas.

It's great to have friends and relatives who help like that, Joanna! And not just a plotting session, but a plotting summit. Sounds highly productive.

Talking to yourself on a walk sounds like a good way to tap into your subconscious, Janie. But who talks back?

I find that telling myself to work on just before I got to sleep works.
