Double Duty

This has been quite a week. Last Friday my editor sent me the copy edit of If Hooks Could Kill and asked if I could get it back to them by June 12, which is next Tuesday. At the same time I am trying to finish the rewrite of Yarn2Go, which was due on June 1, but they gave me a few more weeks.

And the final thing in the mix is that I’m going to Chicago early Saturday morning. If I was going alone it would be fine because I could just sit there chained to my laptop. But my son is coming with to help me replace some air conditioners before the whole family comes this July for my husband’s family reunion.

Traveling with my son is fun, but it’s hard to get writing done. We pretty much drop our bags and go go go.

So, to try to manage all my deadlines, I tried something I’ve never done before - working on two books at once. I did have to give up going to the gym all week, and I’ve been out of yogurt all week and just finally went to the grocery store at 10 pm, but it seems to be working.

I started out spending the mornings on my desktop with Yarn2Go, which is in WordPerfect and then moving to my laptop to work on the copy edit of If Hooks Could Kill, which is in Word.

In the midst of this my desktop started doing weird stuff like that awful blue screen showing up before it shuts itself off. But I think I fixed it.

Wednesday, I switched it and began in the morning on the copy edit. I took a few breaks to walk the dog, eat, and make the crochet patterns again, but I ended up finishing with the copy edit around 2 a.m. I just have to check over the crochet patterns. But I will easily make the June 12, deadline.

Now I can go back full throttle to the Yarn2Go. I’m rewriting the end now. Yarn2Go has knitting, and I have to finish making the sample of the pattern I’m including. There will be a muffin recipe, too. Even with the trip, I think I will be able to get it to my editor by the end of the third week in June.

And then what? Maybe a few days off and it’s right back into working on the next crochet mystery. Luckily I already have been thinking about it. I’ve already been thinking about the next yarn retreat mystery and what research I need to do. What is so amazing to me is that I can be thinking about all these things at once and am able to keep them straight.

Now it’s time to throw some things in a bag and get ready to go.

Bravo, Betty! I can never manage that, and end up pushing through on a marathon for the first book, then a second marathon for the other. Enjoy your success!

Wow, Betty, all that and travel, too! Not to mention two different writing programs--and computer glitches. Sounds impossible, but how fun that you're accomplishing it!

Well, I can't wait to read what you have written. Congrats!

Planner, thanks for the good wishes.

Camille, I didn't think I'd be able to do it either, but I think working on different computers in different rooms helped.

Linda, at least with the travel part, I'm going to another home, so I don't really have to bring much stuff. Sorry, I won't see you at Printers Row. All the signing slots were taken.

Whitney, I just hope that Caseey didn't accidentally show up in If Hooks Could Kill and Molly didn't mysteriously appear in Yarn2Go.

Wow! Sounds exciting! Having two books going at once is quite a feat! You can do it! Chrystle

Mare, both books have patterns. If Hooks Could Kill had crochet and Yarn2Go has knitting. I've been going back and forth between those, too, this week.

Chrystle, it keeps me on my toes.
