New Years Eve and Superstitions

It's New Year's Eve!  Just after midnight, the year 2015 will begin. 

As you know, I've become a superstitions nut, largely because of my new Superstition Mystery Series.  Are you aware that there are a lot of superstitions involving New Year's Eve and New Year's day? 

A very nice guy sent me a link to his blog a couple of months ago when he discussed some New Year superstitions.  It began with a photo of a man wearing red briefs and apparently nothing else, and the caption read that, if you want to experience passion in the new year, it's a good idea to wear red underwear on New Year's Day.  True?  I don't know, and red isn't my favorite color.  If you give it a try, let me know how it works out.  :) 

I've read multiple places that it's a good idea to have money in your pocket or in your wallet on New Year's Day to ensure you'll be well supplied with money in the year to come.  However, don't spend that money on New Year's Day or you'll be poor during the upcoming year. 

I don't know about you, but I'm not wild about the idea of people coming to visit just after the stroke of midnight, but it's okay with me if they come either earlier in the evening or sometime during the next day.  The superstitions involved with that are varied, but it seems that if your visitor is a man with dark hair and money in his pockets and bearing food or drink, your luck will be good.  It's less clear how good your luck will be if the guy's not a brunet, or if your visitor is, instead, a woman. 

The New Year can represent a new start, so there are rituals you can perform to make the year a good one.  You can put a coin outside on a string before midnight and draw it in right afterward to, again, ensure you have money.  Stand up or go upstairs at the stroke of midnight to ensure positive stuff next year.   

I posted on Facebook about some contrary superstitions.  For one thing, I read in one source that it's bad luck to work on New Year's Day. As a writer, I work every day, and I'm sure I'm not the only one, writer or not. I was a lot happier to read in another source that everyone who works should do something reflecting their work on New Year's Day to ensure a productive and profitable year. And as I said on Facebook, I think I'll go with that one.
