It is just about a month until WOUND UP IN MURDER, the third in the Yarn Retreat Mysteries, comes out. I find promoting my books to be the hard part and wanted to do something fun. I came up with the idea of having the Worry Doll do a Facebook promotional tour. The pattern for the doll is in the book and my amateur sleuth, dessert baker and retreat leader Casey Feldstein says more than once how much she could use the services of the worry doll she’s making.
In case anybody doesn’t know what a worry doll is, you are supposed to give them your worries and night and by morning, they’re gone. All the one’s I have seen have in been in groups and been made in Guatemala My version of a worry doll is a little different than the traditional Guatemalan ones who wear long dresses, head wraps, are tiny and have bland facial features.
I thought I’d take a lot of pictures of the worry doll to post throughout the month, so when my son and I went to Disneyland and California Adventure on Sunday (we have annual passes), I thought I would take her with. These days you have to go through security everywhere including the “Happiest Place on Earth.” I worried what would happen if the Disneyland security person wondered what was up with me bringing a doll along, like maybe I couldn’t go anywhere without her.
Luckily it didn’t happen. The guy who checked my bag was too busy trying to say something clever. I don’t think he even noticed her.
You know how kids - even adult ones are embarrassed by their parents. Picture me pulling out the doll and asking my son to take her picture while I held her and made it look like a selfie.
The best part was when we went on the Winnie the Pooh ride. We were in the backseat of a two seater car. As we went through the ride, my son grabbed the doll and tried to take her photo with a passing Pooh character. He was in a hurry and I said a little loudly that he was being kind of rough with her and her dress was falling off.
I can just imagine what the people in the front seat must have thought. They did give us an odd look when we got off the ride.
I planned to culminate the worry doll’s trip to Disneyland with a photo of just her with one of the costumed characters. But in the end, I decided that trying to arrange that might be a little too over the top. So, we got a picture with Minnie, Pluto and Mickey, with her sticking out of my pocket.
I don’t know whether giving her daily Facebook posting will help the book, but I’m having fun with the whole thing.

Sounds like a really fun time, Betty. Too bad Mickey Mouse didn't focus on your worry doll. I'd imagine he's got lots of worries considering all his amusement parks and his TV shows and everything else. What a great way to promote an upcoming book!
Linda, I never thought of that. I should have offered the Worry Doll's skills to Mickey.
What fun! You are so creative! (What? The Worry Doll faked a selfie?? I guess she doesn't worry about mere details.)
Perhaps Mickey should buy your book and make his own worry doll. (Or maybe knitting and crocheting would appeal more to Minnie and she could make it for him.)

Miriam, The doll people are lining up to be in the Facebook interviews with the Worry Doll. I hope it gives everybody a laugh.
