Cold Weather

It's so funny. My friend Becke Martin's daughter went from Chicago to L.A. this week and she's dealing with the shock of 80 something temperatures. I came from L.A. to Chicago and am dealing with the shock of sub zero wind chill.

I'm so used to throwing on a hoodie and going out. The idea of bundling up seems totally foreign. Today it was a hat, two scarves, my Eddie Bauer long cost that is so heavy it seems to have a life of it's own, gloves and boots that were for warmth rather than style. All this only to walk a few blocks and get on a train and have to open the coat, take off the gloves etc. so I don't overheat. Then wrap up again before I go back outside.

Downtown there was more opening and closing, taking off and putting on every timeI went inside and back outside. How did I used to manage this with ease?

I had to wrap myself up the other night just to put the garbage in the can on the back porch.

But I have to say the cold weather makes me feel good. It's like a tonic and seems to make my arms and legs work better. And the benefit of all those layers of clothes was that if I fell down (which I didn't) I had so much padding I wouldn't get hurt and would probably just roll down the street.

The weather is on in the background and they're talking about even colder weather and snow. Even though the cold weather makes me feel good, I'm looking forward to going back to Southern California and leaving all these layers behind.
