Words

And another month bites the dust.  It's been warm here which made it hard to remember what month it was anyway.  But it's turned cloudy and instead of the 80s we've been having, it's going back to a high in the 60s tomorrow.  I hope the weather change brings some rain.  We really need it.

Words are kind of my business.  Well, with some yarn thrown in.  I always looked at crossword puzzles as something I couldn't do.  I never even tried them since it seemed beyond me.  But then I had a People Magazine on a plane and got to the crossword puzzle at the back of the magazine and started to play around with it.  Wonder of wonders, I actually did the whole thing.  It started something that has continued on.  I admit to sticking to mostly easy ones, but now I do the crossword in the AAA magazine and the AARP magazine.  I subscribed to People just to get the crosswords.

Doing them has made me more aware of words and looking t them differently.  It was as if I was seeing them in a new way.  Take longing.  the basic word is long, but that has nothing to do with the word when the  ing is added.  I started thinking how hard it must be for people learning English to understand all the weird things about our language.  Like read.  Same spelling if it's the present or the past meaning.

Doing the crosswords has made me more aware of meanings and subtle differences between words.

I recently expanded to an actual book of crossword puzzles.  It feels like exercise for my brain when I'm waiting somewhere.

Someday I may work my way up to the New York Times one that appear in the print newspaper I get from my Chicago neighborhood.  It's always good to keep stretching your mental horizons.

Good morning -- The first two months of 2025 have flown by -- amazing.

I've heard that English is the hardest language to learn. I know bits and pieces of several other languages but listening to some sounds incomprehensible to me.

I'm having great fun with the crocheted cat pillows -- made one with a striped yarn called Latte -- sort of looks like a tiger!! I also made one with long ears -- looks more like a rabbit -- added a pompom for a tail. I really like the pentagon-shaped motif on the "tummy" but I have trouble remembering to put only two double crochet stitches in each group -- three is the norm.

News showing the Oscar nominees -- I recognize so few names and haven't seen any of the movies. We've talked about going to "Conclave."

A few household chores to do, then back to crocheting -- I'm "hooked" on the cats!!

Enjoy your day, your crocheting and your crossword puzzles.

It is amazing how fast the first two months of this year have gone. February was rather peaceful around here for which I'm thankful.
We are enjoying beautiful weather and I'm just soaking it in as I know the summer is coming and it will be steamy.
I'm working on a granny square blanket. I need 16 more squares and then I can start piecing it together. I've been trying to use up some of my stash. I am mourning the closing of Joann's which is one of my happy places. Sigh.. Happy weekend everyone.

Patty, I didn't realize the crocheted cats were that big. They must be fun as pillows.

I saw Wicked last week. I assume it go some nominations for something. I really enjoy going to an actual movie theater. It's a whole experience.

Enjoy making the cats!

Sally, I have never been to Florida in the summer. But the first time we went to Disney World, it was April and already pretty steamy.

I am really sad about Joann's too. It was wonderful to be surrounded by all those supplies to make things. It was like there was creativity in the air.

Your blanket sounds lovely. Do you have any secret to putting together the squares?

Happy weekend to you!

Sally -- After making 160 squares before sewing them together for a granny afghan, I started making one big square or rectangle. I want my afghan to be done when I do that last stitch -- no sewing together for me!!

I also started doing crossword puzzles. I get them in a booklet at the market called Easy Crosswords. Just my speed. I also enjoy going to a live theater for a movie. It is an event for me. I walk to the Grove and after the movie I go to Farmer's Market and get a tea at Starbucks and sit outside and read. That is my happy place.

Miriam, that's the same booklet I got. And it's just my speed, too. Our first apartment was near Farmer's Market, long before the Grove was there. I have always loved Farmer's Market. Now I go to the movie at City Walk when my son and Jakey go to Universal. Then we all go out to dinner.

I'm a crossword puzzle addict, Betty. I do them all the time! Even found some in magazines and newspapers on the trip to Indiana from which I just returned.

I lay out the blanket on the guest room bed (because my cat is not allowed in there). Then I take one row at a time to stitch together. It makes it easier and if you lay them alternatively you don't need to pin them together. I think next I'm going to do one big square like you mentioned.
