The Case of the Unfinished Kitten

It's National Crochet Month.  I'm not sure how to celebrate.  Maybe by finishing that kitten I started.  I have a lot going on, so it's been hard for me to focus on just finishing the kitten.

There are different level of crochet, for me at least.  Working on a scarf or big granny square afghan doesn't take a lot of concentration.  It's repetitious and there is not much stitch counting.  And there's no face to get right.  The scarf or afghan are easy to work on for awhile and put down.

I have discovered that making amirgurumi which is what the little toys are called needs to be worked on differently.  It would probably be best to make the whole thing in one sitting, but at the very least, I find that I need to complete whatever body part I'm making.  I keep track of where I am by making a list of the rows and checking them off as I go, but I still find it hard to pick up where I left off if I stopped in the middle of something like the kitten's leg or the body.

I keep telling myself that the toys are more of a creative expression than following the pattern so exactly.   I need to lose myself in making it--which doesn't work well with interruptions.

I find that mornings are my most creative times and probably the best time to work on that kind of crochet, but it is also my best writing time.  By evening, I don't want to deal with the tension and excitement that goes with working on a toy.  I don't get into the flow as easily.

Well, it's only the first week of March and it gives me another three weeks or so to figure this out.

Hurray for National Crochet Month!! I've made a couple little crocheted critters but really don't enjoy doing them. The cat pillows I've been making are another story -- absolutely love them. I'll soon have a clowder.

I counted my skeins of yarn yesterday -- I have 179 -- a mixture of 5, 7 and 10 ounce skeins. At an average of three skeins per small blanket, I have enough for a year of crocheting. Most of the blankets I make are approximately 40 by 48 inches.

It rained overnight -- enough that there is a stream running down the driveway. Just started again and the rain drops are making big bubbles on the patio. At first I thought it was hail but then they started popping. The bubbles are floating around -- have never seen anything like that before.

March is crochet month, April is new Tarzana Hookers book month -- life is good!!

Enjoy your day and figuring out how to do your kitty.

I just found a website called amigurumi.today that has a bunch of free patterns -- there's one called an Adele Doll!! That might be fun to make.

I didn't know it was National Crochet Month. I'll have to find a store to buy some new yarn. The Joann's is threadbare. :(
I haven't tried amigurumi yet. It looks daunting to me. I'm not sure I have the skills. Maybe I can find a class.
Happy weekend everyone.

Patty, Weird about the rain bubbles. I hope it's a good omen. Your cat pillow seems more relaxing to work on. Small projects are harder to work on. I will check out the website. I have to see what an Adele doll is.
Happy Crocheting!

Sally, I'm sad about Joann's too. Michael's has some yarn. I'm sure you have the skills to make amirgurumi. There are some basic things to remember. Everything I have made is done in a spiral and you need to mark the first and the last stitch in each round. And count the stitches every row or so. I count by touching each stitch with a pencil tip as you're dealing with a small space and it's easy to lose track of the stitches.

I've found the Mainstays yarn from Walmart is very good quality. They don't have a huge selection of colors but what they have works for the blankets I make. And a plus -- their prices are reasonable.

Happy National Crochet Month! I never knew this before. I love to crochet. I have not tried amigurumi but it doesn't sound like me. Enjoy!

Miriam, I guess the best way to celebrate is to crochet. It is fun to see all the different things you can crochet.
