The weather has been sunny and mild. The only clue of the season is how short the days are. The humidity goes way up at night and the pavement has wet spots in the morning. All that moisture has made the grass turn a spring green.
But it's about to change with a forecast of rain next week--just in time for Jakey's birthday and Christmas. But the days will start adding minutes of daylight instead of subtracting.
It is getting harder to concentrate on my manuscript since with all the holiday stuff and taking care of year end business things to get ready for next year's taxes. Somehow I got hooked into dealing with all that.
We're behind in decorating. I thnk Jakey and my son wore themselves out with the Halloween decorations--some of which are still up. There is a greeting committee of Halloween solar lights as we come in the back gate.
So far, the only decoration was done by me. I bought a wreath from IKEA years ago. It was after Christmas and really cheap. This year, I finally opened the box. It's supposed to be battery operated and all I had to do was loosen one screw to open the battery compartment. Except--well, the screw wouldn't come out. It wouldn't turn at all. I thought it was me, but my son had no luck either. He was all for giving up and tossing it. Not me. I was determined to get it to work so I took a hammer and smashed the battery door off and put some batteries in and viola, it worked. It even has a timer and goes on for six hours and then off. The battery compartment doesn't even show.
I have to say that I smile when I see it on the door. When there's a will, there's a way.

Good morning -- Lovely wreath -- glad you got it to work. Years ago, I bought a wreath to use on the coffee table -- it had battery-operated lights. The problem was the batteries ran out of power really, really quickly -- it was getting pricey having to replace them continually so I ended up putting a big candle in a glass globe in the middle of the wreath -- worked great. I'd bought a smoke detector that was supposed to have a battery that lasted 10 years and was not replaceable. After little more than a year, the darn thing started shrieking in the middle of the night -- there was no indication of any smoke so I pushed the reset button to turn it off. About 10 minutes later it did it again -- same thing another 10 minutes later. The only way to get it to stop was the smash the compartment with a hammer. I bought another detector and replace the battery once a year -- no problems!!
I'm back to my blanket crocheting after doing a few Christmas things. Finished one in the cross stitch pattern, started a big granny square. I've also made several of the kitty pillows to give to our fireman friend -- he says, thankfully, he hasn't had to give one to a child for quite a while.
Wish Jakey a Happy Birthday for me -- hope he has a wonderful day. And the merriest of Christmas greetings to all of you.
I love a lit wreath on my black front door. I was lucky as well to find one really cheap. Added some battery lights and instant Christmas decoration. Thankful for simple. Have a great weekend.
Patty, Having to replace batteries is definitely a problem. It's great that you found a way around it with the wreath.
So, we have the same hammer solutions.
It's wonderful that you make the cat pillows for your fireman friend to give to children. It must make him feel good to be able to offer them something comforting. It's good news that he hasn't had to give any out lately.
I will tell Jakey about your birthday wish. He is super excited about his birthday this year. My mother always made a big event out of birthdays. And not just for our family. She baked birthday cakes for friends, too.
Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to you and your family.
Sally, The lights make all the difference. I hope you have a great weekend!
Nice lights, Betty, and fun to hear how your determination helped. No decorations at our house and not a lot in our neighborhood,
And Happy Birthday to Jakey!
Linda, There are not a lot of decorations around us either. There was much more for Halloween. Maybe it says something about everyone's mood.
Happy Birthday to Jakey! The wreath looks loverly. Merry Christmas to all!
Miriam, I will pass your good wishes on to Jakey. It looks like the wreath is it for holiday decorations this year, so I'm glad the I persevered and got it to work. Happy Everything to you!
