Rain

Yesterday the sky was a sickly taupe color and the rain was so heavy that the gutters overflowed.  Parts of the yard disappeared under water.  It felt like the sky was falling down with the jarring sound of alerts about tornadoes and evacuations coming on my phone.

But today, at least right now, there are patches of blue sky reflected in the left over puddles.  There are even moments when the sun comes through.

The shortest day of the year is behind us and already a few minutes of light have been added.  It feels like a reminder that no matter how dark and threatening things feel, it will get better.

I don't make new years resolutions, but just put the wish out there that the new year will be better than the last.

More rain is supposed to come  today, but not the same kind of downpours.  And then the sun will come out again and I won't have to turn on the lamp in my writing room-- the light coming in the window will be enough.

Good morning -- The California weather has been disastrous. I heard from a Sacramento friend who said there had been torrential rains and winds up to 80 miles an hour -- trees and fences down all over the place. Hopefully, it will end soon without too much damage.

I hope your Christmas day was a good one. We had a nice family time -- my grandson said to me "Grandma, you are the goat," I asked if I should feel complimented or offended. He said that means "greatest of all time." I never would have guessed that!!

We drove around last night to look at holiday lights -- there weren't many neighborhoods with decorations. When the kids were little, we lived in Sacramento -- whole neighborhoods would coordinate their decorations. The Cadillac dealership downtown always had a huge animated display in their showroom. How things do change over the years.

I continue to crochet -- hope that never changes. One of my gifts was numerous skeins of yarn -- hurray for that!!

Take care -- stay in and dry.

Patty, How awful for your friend in Sacramento. Wind like that is scary. We had some hints of high winds, but it never got that bad. It seems that the worst of the rain is over with only some showers this afternoon.

What a nice thing for your grandson to say, even if you had to figure out what "goat" stands for.

The only holiday lights I saw this year was the display in Cambria which was impressive. We still might check out the display near the area that burned last January. It is encouraging that with everything that happened, the streets with lighted trees is on this year.

I had a lull in feeling like making anything, but last night I was looking at one of the many crochet books I have and felt inspired.

Hopefully, the sun will come out tomorrow. Happy crocheting!

The local weather reports seem to have fun teasing us, Betty. I keep checking to see when the rain is expected to stop, and when it'll start again, and they never seem to be entirely accurate. Maybe it's because the rain speaks for itself. It was damp but not raining when we started taking the dogs for a walk this morning but was definitely raining by the time we got home. Right now, the prediction is that it will rain this afternoon, then stop for days. We'll see.
I like your new year's wish. And have a Happy New Year filled with writing!

Linda, The rain has been off and on here. Off now and I just went outside to clear all the palm fronds that fell on our walkway to the street. I am looking forward to some sun. But I saw that rain is in the prediction for next week. At least it will give us time to figure out what was blocking the downspout and making the gutter overflow. A benefit from the rain is that the air felt fresh and invigorating as I was tossing the palm fronds.

Happy New Year! My friend cancelled her Christmas Eve dinner party due to rain. I stayed home all day Christmas waiting for the torrential rain and flooding that was predicted but it never came. It is amazing how some neighborhoods were drenched and my neighborhood was left unscathed. I hope everybody stays safe.

Miriam Happy New Year to you. It is interesting how different areas get such different amounts of rain. I think the mountains have a lot to do with it. It's too bad about your cancelled dinner. I was glad to stay home on Christmas and watch the Call the Midwife Christmas Special.
