Happy Labor Day! I hope you enjoy a safe holiday whatever you do, whether it's getting together with friends and family for summer's last hurrah or having a quiet weekend before the holiday push begins.
I have always loved the combination of coffee and chocolate together. I've made mocha with hot chocolate with a spoonful of instant coffee added. I've made mocha by adding chocolate syrup to hot coffee. I love Kahlua and have had it in various cocktails.
Every year we make sausage. It's a tradition that dates back to when my husband was a young child, and we have continued the tradition by including friends and family. 2017 will be my 19th sausage party - time really has flown. Family members have passed, friends have gone through ups and downs, but having the sausage party is an occasion that brings us all together and gives us something to look forward to.
The Saturday before Christmas was the traditional date, but we have adjusted it to suit schedules when we must. One year it was Thanksgiving weekend, although most years it's in December.
The sausage recipe is based on ten pounds of ground pork, and in a typical year we'll make 150-170 pounds. That's a long day! Part of the tradition is everyone who participates brings something to eat during the day, and we set aside five pounds of sausage to eat that night, with peppers and onions on crusty rolls, and my husband makes his mother's German Potato Salad.
I usually bring desserts, Cream Cheese and Olives, and ingredients for Kahlua Cocktails. The inspiration for this was a sausage party four or five years ago. We started early one year, due to the amount of sausage that was being made, and breakfast foods were on the buffet table.
In addition to our usual Bellini bar (I'll write a post about that soon), I thought about making a breakfast cocktail that didn't have the acid of a Bloody Mary or Screwdriver. Coffee, kahlua, breakfast - this sounded like an idea whose time had come.
I bought a four-pack of Starbucks Mocha Frappuccino at the grocery store. I thought just the Kahlua and Frappuccino might be too heavy, and decided to lighten up the cocktail with club soda.
Kahlua Cocktail
1 bottle Starbucks Mocha Frappuccino
2 oz Kahlua
Club soda
Put Kahlua in a tall glass filled with ice. Fill halfway with Starbucks Mocha Frappuccino, and top with club soda. Stir to combine, and you're ready for a refreshing breakfast (or any time) cocktail.
I've had this any time of day or night, and it always refreshes!
Let me know what you think of this, and what you like to drink.
