New Feline Family Members
Our last cat died almost three years ago. After having thirteen cats and dogs over the years, being without any seemed strange at first. Then normal. No worries if we left the door to the yard open. No water bowls to trip over or pet food to buy. If we wanted to take off somewhere, we could with no concerns about boarding or finding a pet sitter.
And then I had a Molly Pink moment. She is the sleuth in the Crochet Mysteries and has a houseful of animals, a number of who have been brought in by her son. My son and his family are moving and, well, he brought their three cats to live with us. They came with with their cat boxes, food and water bowls and their needs.
One of them is a thirteen year old Siamese named Spyderman who likes to sit in the sink and drink dribbles of water. He also likes to step into the shower and get wet.
Buttercup has long butterscotch and white hair. Underneath the fluff, she is very tiny. She’s about five or six or maybe seven. And while I’ve known her, she was always skittish and would never let me pet here. Things changed the moment she moved in here. Now we’re best friends and she likes to lay touching someone. She has loved her first chances to be out in our yard after always being an indoor cat. Spyderman is also getting his first taste of walking on grass. All under subervision, though.
Kona, also known as Kitten, is full grown, but has petite paws and a small body. She is black with some white on her face and the tips of her paws. I’ve known her since she was so small you could hold her in one hand. We have always been buds, and she loves to cuddle. Her nails were long and needle sharp. Sweetie that she is, she let me cut them without a problem.
They handled the move with ease. There was a little frantic wandering around the first night they got here, but then they let out a sigh of relief that they were in a good place and relaxed.
They have found their favorite spots. Buttercup likes to sit in the front window and watch the action on the street. Spyderman stretches out on the couch below her. And kitten seems to like a chair in the dining room.
It’s been nice to have something else to think about something else beside The Virus. I do have to get used to not leaving the door open and making sure water and food bowls are full. It’ pretty easy to get accustomed to having cats cuddling in my lap again.
And now I have new cats to write about.

How delightful for you to have new family members in this time of stress! But be careful. Cats can catch and transmit the virus, too--as can dogs. :(
Good for you ! A distraction helps us face the challenges of life right now. I have never been without cats and/or dogs in my entire life. I always take it very hard when one passes over that "Rainbow Bridge", but it seems within days another new friend shows up ! I hope your kids aren't moving too far, but you will still have that strong connection with the pets around.
My two callico beauties are keeping me going right now, since I am home alone !
No Disneyland right now, so you can write like crazy, with 3 new friends wrapped around you. I made a number of masks , with lots of kitty help.
The next book out should be the new series from Chicago, right ? Any idea of a release date ?Then I believe it is Molly's turn next. Keep up the good work !
Linda Johnston,
Yes, the cats are a welcome addition. They have fit right in.
Linda Osborn,
I was like you-- always with pets -- until recently. All of ours have been adoptions of a sort with some even just showing up at the front door. It took no time at all to get used to have these cats.
It's nice that you have cat company. Yes, it is hard when they pass over the Rainbow Bridge. I teared up just thinking of my last moments holding our last cat Rocky.
My son and family aren't moving far away, but they're going from a house to an apartment and having a toddler around is stressful for them, particularly for the 13 year old Siamese.
I think the release date for Murder Ink is in the late fall. The Molly book won't be released until next year. The Yarn Retreat book will have a faster turn around and unless something changes should be released in October or November.
I admire your mask making. I am still working on clearing out a space to put my sewing machine up. As I was going through stuff, I found some elastic and I have some bits of material I could use for masks. I saw a crochet version, but you have to put in a liner.
Thank you for the encouragement. The same goes for you.
Well, to tell the truth, the sewing machine is on the dining room table. I have a sewing/craft room, but it is too crowded to sew in there. Since I am the only one here anyway, who needs a big table. I may start a puzzle on the other end, though that is risky with cats !. I have read and reread just about every book in the house, and I prefer to buy them. I am not a Kindle person either--there is another bedroom which has turned into paperback city.
All our pets except the two cats I have now arrived on their own, just walked in the door or sort of followed someone home from school. Before my husband passed he insisted we get these girls--they are beautiful, but very strong personalities. We bought them at a rather elite animal shelter, where we filled out a lot of paperwork concerning our ways of discipline of pets ! Proper food, shots, etc., and a big chunk of money !
I love your work, and am always ready for a new edition . Sometimes my mind wanders on at the end, deciding what the characters might do next. That's how I have gotten so hung up on Molly and Barry. I just read a new series by Hannah Reed, about an author who goes to Scotland to get over a divorce and write romance novels {really sexy ones}. That is quite a challenge, but she is finally getting involved with a great guy who wears kilts a lot.
Keep up the good work, and sharing about your family too--is Molly's home based on your own ? I have always thought that.
Have fun, DISNEYLAND WILL REOPEN EVENTUALLY !!!
