The Upside When Things Don't Go as Expected

We took Jakey to Disneyland yesterday.  It was a special middle of the week treat when all of our passes were good and we were able to get a reservation.  He was super excited about seeing all the holiday decorations.  We had been telling him about how Small World was special for the holidays and he couldn't wait to go on the ride.

Even though it was a Wednesday and cold, there were lots of people and the wait for the ride was too long for an almost six-year-old, so we put it off until later, hoping the line would be shorter.  When we saw the wait time seemed manageable we took him and he was thrilled with all the colorful lights and already singing the song as the line moved toward the ride.

The music changes for the holidays to a mixture of the Small World song and Jingle Bells.  Not only are the lights outside the ride changed from white to warm colors, but the the inside display has lights and decorations added for the holidays.

Jakey was enchanted as the boat wound through the rooms of singing dolls until....the music abruptly cut out and I saw a long line of boats ahead just before we bumped into the last one in the line and then  the one behind us bumped into us and I imagine it continued on behind us as whatever made the boats move through the water had stopped.

A voice came over a loudspeaker apologizing for the circumstance and said they were working to fix the ride, but if it couldn't be done shortly, the boats would be evacuated with the help of castmembers.

We were stuck just where the Toy Story pair of Woody and Jesse were hanging out.  While the music had stopped, Woody kept twirly his lasso and some animals kept popping up from a hiding place.  Time went on and nothing happened.  We could hear the fireworks booming outside. An infant behind me began to cry.  I was glad I'd stopped at the restroom before the ride.  The man in the front of our boat who had been filming the ride with his phone probably to put on Facebook, put his phone down.

The voice on the loudspeaker asked for our patience while they tried to work things out.  I looked over the side of the water way and saw an exit sign and figured we'd have to climb out of the boat and over the side to a flat area is we were evacuated.

Finally, the voice came back and said the ride would start moving momentarily and advised the castmembers not to stop evacuating the boats.  And then there was a rush as the current began to swirl in the water and the armada of boats began to move forward like a long train as we went through the last of the room of dancing dolls with no music.

At last we left all the colors and dolls behind and re emerged to the outside.  To make up for our trouble, they offered a fast pass on our next ride.  Ha Ha about that because when  we got to the Haunted Mansion and imagined going right to the front of the line, the ride was broken.

I tried to explain to Jakey that while it's nice when things go smoothly, there's no story.  It's the bumps in the road that are interesting and that you always remember.   The happy ride with the catchy song became a memorable adventure.

I'm going to be singing "It's a Small World" all day!! What a fun ride that is. Yes, the glitches make things memorable -- when I was 15, and I'm 85 now, my grandmother and I got stuck on a ferris wheel at the San Mateo County fair -- we were way up at the top and sat there for the better part of an hour. Had a good view of our surroundings!!

A question: Does the muffin tin need to be greased for Molly's muffins? I have some yummy orange marmalade to slather on them and don't want a stuck-in-the-pan mess,

The hugs pattern reminded me of a shrug I made for my daughter -- followed the directions exactly and when I finished, I couldn't figure out how to put it on!! For some reason, I thought it was more like a slip-over sweater and there is certainly no neck hole. Finally figured it out and it is great -- I didn't want to send it to her but I did. After finishing my Christmas gift projects, I plan to make one for myself. I've made half a dozen hooded scarfs -- adapted a pattern, actually just a picture I saw in a magazine, to make each one a bit different.

Enjoy your day -- Happy Crocheting!!

Oh, my. It's always an adventure to go to Disneyland, but your adventure was unexpected! Sounds like Disneyland rides need some maintenance.

That song , just mentioning it gets it into your head for days.
Since I KNOW you have lots of free time, I want to suggest a book I just read. "Where the Crawdads Sing"-- really fantastic. There is a murder, but it is the human emotions that carry the story along. It is a movie too, but I always go for the book version. I like to make my own mental images of the characters. This is one you will really enjoy.
By the way, Casey and friends arrived on Nov. 30, early release I guess.

Ha, ha, the song with a Jingle Bells follow up! Yikes!! It sounds almost surreal. Hope you and your little guy have recovered. It will be a memory forever though.

Patty, It must have been scary being stuck on a Ferris wheel. I wasn't that worried about needing to be rescued from Small World.

I think you mean Casey's drop biscuits. I always use the paper liners in the muffin tins. It's very cool that you can figure out how to make things from a picture.

Linda O. Johnston, I recently read an article about how Disneyland isn't what it used to be and it mentioned rides breaking. Nobody seems to care as it is always busy.

Linda Osborn, thanks for the recommendation. I had that book on my list of want to reads. I'm glad to know that Casey and friends arrived. I hope you enjoy it. I had a lot of fun writing it.

As for the Small World song-- Jakey loves to sing it over and over. It makes my son crazy.

Sally, surreal is a good way to describe it. Jakey has been through a lot of upheavals lately, so the ride situation is probably just small change in comparison.

"Where the Crawdads Sing" is a great book -- the movie, not so much.

I tore the page with the biscuit recipe from the paperback book -- it's titled "Molly's Delicious Drop Biscuits." I don't remember seeing Casey's biscuits. Molly took baskets of them to several people.

When my kids were little, my mother was bookkeeper at a large toy store -- the Disney salesmen gave her passes to Disneyland so we went frequently. Too bad to hear it's not what it used to be. It's been 15 years since I've been there.

Enjoy your day --
