The other day Jakey walked by as I was crocheting a big granny square blanket. He stopped and asked what I was making and then he said it was sure taking a long time. I laughed because he was right, but there was also another purpose to the blanket that he didn't understand.
I began it in January when it seemed like there were fires everywhere and they were close enough that we all had go bags by the door. I was on high alert all the time. Tense, anxious, nervous and unable to let go. I began the blanket then because it was a simple repetitive pattern that can help relax my mind. It got put aside when the fires were put out.
But I picked it up again recently as it seems like everything is spiraling out of control. This week it was about a dental appointment that I was dreading and nervous about. I just wished I could crochet while it was happening.
As it turned out, the anticipation was far worse than the appointment.
The blanket is almost finished. Just a few more rounds and then some edging. It would be cool if the soothing quality of working on it somehow stayed with it--like it gave off a soothing vibe to whoever used it.
The scones are still waiting to be made. There has been an invasion of the kitchen as the meat eaters have been having steak tastings. I get the cleanup. But this weekend, it looks like the kitchen will be mine.

Good morning -- Glad you're almost done with the granny square blanket -- they are great to make with their repetitive rows. What sort of edging to you use?
Dentist appointments are the pits -- always good when it isn't as bad as anticipated. I had a chipped tooth repaired a couple days ago -- have no idea exactly what they did but it involved a lot of water being sprayed around and all over me!! Tooth looks really good!!
Temperature was 115 yesterday -- "cooling down" to 106 today!! Danny had to walk across a big parking lot yesterday and he said he could feel the heat through his shoes.
I went through my notebook of crochet patterns and organized them -- I have a couple dozen I use on a regular basis. I pitched the front post double crochet pattern -- just don't like the way it looks, but there are many more to keep me busy. With the a/c on, it feels good to have a blanket on my lap.
Dan never did a thing in the kitchen -- Floyd liked to cook but oh my gosh, he made the biggest messes. I clean up as I go; he just made bigger messes and what he called clean was still messy to me!! He taught me to make tomato gravy, which I'd never even heard of -- delicious over biscuits.
Have you started another crochet project? How many blankets have you made for Jakey?
Enjoy your day, your writing and your crocheting,
Patty, I'm glad your chipped tooth repair went well. 115! I'm not surprised your son could feel it through his shoes. It is great that your A/C works so well.
My son just got interested in cooking. It has to do with his love of meat. The rest of the family is very happy with his new interest. It's fine with me as being a vegetarian is my thing. I have never tried to impose it on anyone and don't like to make a production about it.
I finished all the body parts for the kitten and started to sew them together. I have made a point not to start anything else until I finish these two projects.
I hope you enjoy your day inside!
Glad your dental appointment wasn't too bad, Betty. And it's great that your crocheting helps to calm you in stressful times.
I just helped my granddaughter learn the corner-to-corner stitch. It is a little tricky in that she is left-handed. Found a great YouTube to help. It's fun to pass on a few skills.
Summer has set in here in Central Florida. I'm thankful my AC works great and I can still crochet. I'm working on a granny square blanket for fall. Easier to keep cool by working on squares. Happy weekend to all!
Hello -- I just caught up with your adventures by reading Killer Hooks, Murder by the Hook, Death among the Stitches, and re-reading your blog back to when you went to check out the property in Indiana. I have connections in Indiana, Illinois, North Carolina (where your brother lived and at the beach,) and Florida and have ended up with a dentist in a town in Virginia by chance. Ages ago, for my ex-husband's job in France, before going to Paris, we were in Grenoble for six weeks while the students in the program were getting oriented. One of the students taught me how to knit and crochet. That's what I did that year out in our little one room apartment in the suburbs. One project got out of hand, though, and I remember being at the airport in Belgium before we went back to the U.S. undoing it. That was very time-consuming, perfect for a delayed flight, because the yarn was knobby. Thanks for writing this blog and all of your books! And thanks to Patty and Sally and Linda for being there for you, too. Kathryn
Linda O. Johnston, I am sure your dogs help with stress. There is nothing like cuddling a pet.
Sally, the corner to corner is nice. I made a nice blanket with it, but it was wool yarn and moths got into it. I would like to make something again with it. But I realize i will have to learn how to do it all over again.
Working on squares is a lot cooler than having a growing afghan on your lap. Keep cool!
Kathryn, it's nice to meet you. It sounds like we have some locations in common. Thanks for sharing a little about yourself. It sounds like you have had an interesting life.
I'm glad your dentist appointment went well. I always bring a book and read my way through the waiting times. I also like to crochet for relaxation. And now since my friend adopted two kittens I love petting them and hearing their purrs. That is really relaxing. Enjoy your kitchen time.
Miriam, spending cuddle time with pets is always calming. It's not quite the same, but I watched a documentary MY OCTOPUS TEACHER about a diver who developed a relationship with an octopus and found it to be be fascinating and calming. Then I read a report of an octopus named Inky who figured out how to escape from the aquarium he was being kept in. Inky made his way back to the ocean and freedom.
