Change of Plans

I had big plans of what I was going to write about. It was going to be about what makes someone stand out.  But after spending three hours at the rehab place my husband is rehabbing after a fall, I am just too done in.  So maybe next week.

It started with having to call the paramedics because he couldn't get up.  They were super nice and professional and took him to the Kaiser ER.  After many hours they determined he had fracture and chipped a bone in his leg.  They kept him in the hospital over the weekend and they sent him to the rehab place.

To say that he's not happy camper is an understatement.  We have gone there daily to bring him whatever he requests.  Today's visit was much longer as they wanted to show him how to get the car when he's released.  They showed us, anyway while he watched and insisted he couldn't do it.  Afterwards, we tried to cheer him up by wheeling him out of his room to the pleasant reception area.

After I got home, it took me doing a crossword  and drinking coffee in the backyard to recuperate from the three hour visit. Then I was renewed  enough to take in the trash cans from the street.  I tried to make a pleasant moment of it by looking at the sky as evening was falling.  There were a few clouds and the color of the sky was a little hazy to imply some dampness. Most of all was a feeling of peace.

I work on the rewrite of SCONED TO DEATH in the morning.  Then I have to stop too soon because of everything else.

This was easy to write.  I just recounted  what happened.  In other words I didn't have to think too much with my weary brain.  And now a dish of ice cream and watching an old comedy before I attempt any more chores.

Good morning -- You have had an exhausting week -- hope things start getting better very soon. A dish of ice cream and an old comedy show sounds like a good remedy!!

I continue with my crocheting -- about two-thirds done with a big granny square blanket. I'm a bit ahead of my goal of one blanket a week for the Ronald McDonald House -- they will get a good stash the end of the month.

Glad you're able to work on "Sconed to Death" -- any idea of a publication date?

Take good care of yourself -- dealing with a crabby patient is not easy!!

Patty, I didn't realize you turned out blankets that quickly. Impressive. Jakey saw me crocheting the big granny square blanket I started during the fires here (that was like January) and he said it was taking me a long time to finish.

I think SCONED TO DEATH will come out around next August. The paper back edition of DEATH AMONG THE STITCHES comes out in January.

I always try to find some joy in the day and do my best to spread it.

Happy crocheting!

That sounds so difficult, Betty. Be sure to take good care of yourself as well as your husband.

I'm sorry you had a hectic week and hope you're husband recovers quickly. Does crocheting help you relax a bit? That and a bit of chocolate helps me. Sending good healing vibes your way.

Oh no__I don't like to think about rehab places. In the last few years I have had 4 wonderful "vacations" in them. The longest was 3 months for a broken leg {with surgery} and it was not fun. If the food doesn"t get you the screaming night people will. Take him treats, you know--candy, soda, whatever he likes. Books, tablet {if you can get their internet to work}, phone, and absolutely insist he has a TV that gets more than one station. I feel for him, and for you !!

Linda O. Johnston, it's all very exhausting and I am making sure to take care of myself.

Sally, good suggestion about the crochet. It's a good time to finish the big granny square I started months ago. Thanks for the healing vibes!

Linda Osborn, I can imagine those "vacations" were tough. We were lucky to have someone who had researched rehab places who gave us a recommendation. The place is far better than the ones I dealt with with my mother. My husband even seems to like the food. We do bring him treats and he can watch TV on his phone and get more options than the place's TV offers. He hasn't complained about screaming night people, but he is annoyed by the endless announcements over the PA system.

You are amazing to have gone through 3 months in one of these places!

I'm so sorry to hear about your husband. You are an angel to take such good care of him. I am glad to hear you are also taking good care of yourself. I hope he heals soon. I just finished another large afghan using leftover yarn. I made knit rectangles with three rows of crochet around them. Then I sewed them all together. It is fun to see all the colors. It came out better than I expected. Now I am going to make some smaller afghans then find somewhere to donate them.

Miriam, what a great idea to mix knitted rectangles with crochet around them. It sounds beautiful. Patty might be able to give you advice on where to donate the one you are planning to make.
