It's a lot more peaceful this week than last, though my black eye is even blacker. I'm sure it will go away some day. The scrape on my hand is just about totally healed as is my knee. My glasses flew off when I fell and got bent out of shape, but a few minutes at the Costco glasses' counter and they're functional again.
Now I just want to think about other things. Though even when I was in the ER, I was mentally taking notes about the experience. That is one of the coolest things about writing. It makes you look at everything more completely.
I'm always thinking about how I would describe a person or a place. I am fascinated watching how people interact. Even with an ice pack on my head, I was watching what was going on around me. The worried look of a couple in ER waiting room. The man in a wheel chair who had a sense of resignation about him, as if he'd been there many times before.
I noticed details like the picture on the ceiling in the room where they did the Cat Scan. It was actually like a glass sheet with light behind it and had a scene of trees and flowers. I guess the point was it was something to focus on when you were stuck in the ring. Though it was lost on me because the technician told me to close my eyes.
During what seemed like endless waiting for the results from the tests, I watched a couple of fire fighters walking in the hall. They had on the yellow protective pants they wear. I guessed they were paramedics who must have come in with a patient. They seemed to be making small talk and I wondered how they came down from dealing with someone in a life threatening emergency.
I was struck with the difference between people like me who were there because of some sort of emergency and the people who worked there and it was all just a Thursday night.
I watched a cleaning person go into a room that had just been vacated by a patient. It was as if she was on a different frequency as she started her work.
Who knows when I'll find a way to use all that. Nothing is ever wasted, even watching how people in the grocery store react when they see my black eye.

Good morning -- Glad to hear you are feeling better and healing. A bruise around the eyes seems to take a long time to go away. I remember going into a restaurant a few days after my mishap, while I still looked like a raccoon, and taking off my dark glasses. Two women absolutely gasped. It's hard to imagine working around emergencies all day long and then shutting it off at the end of the day.
We saw "80 for Brady" -- I thoroughly enjoyed it -- even my son liked it!! It says "Based on a true story." I asked Google how much was fiction -- basically all of it, other than the fact of four women (five in the original group) being big Tom Brady fans and watching games together. They never actually went to the Super Bowl nor have they met Tom Brady. But fact or fiction, it was fun to watch.
In one of your previous blogs, you mentioned the Crochet Guild. Are you a member? I looked at their website and at the courses they offer to get a master certification -- talks about learning advanced crochet stitches and more complicated patterns, I love to crochet -- do it several hours each day -- but I want to relax while doing it, not concentrating on something really complicated. Maybe some people do -- not me. I'm happy doing chains, singles and doubles -- lots of good combinations of those!!
I do have a master gardener certification -- I can happily spend hours planting, pruning, weeding. We bought a house that had what once was a nice swimming pool -- it had been neglected and was in bad shape. I had holes jackhammered in the bottom for drainage, had it filled with dirt and made a beautiful planting area.
Enjoy your day and weekend --
Patty, I am a member of the Crochet Guild. I have never taken the master classes. I'm with you-- I like something easy and relaxing to make. Though I still want to try making dolls and toys. I'm glad to hear the movie was fun. Your garden sounds wonderful.
I'm a crocheter for relaxation too. One of my favorite stitches is corner to corner. It is so easy because you don't have to count out a long chain. And the end result is lovely. Give it a try.
I agree with Sally -- c2c is great -- amazing how fast a square can be made. It's quick and easy.
Sally, I made a blanket with corner to corner and you are right, it is lovely.
Wow, Betty. It's good that you can consider such difficult things research, but sorry you've had to go through that.
